Philippe Druillet

Who doesn’t know the famous artist and comics writer, Philippe Druillet !

He published his first work, Le Mystère des Abîmes, in 1966, generating an instant fan base. He followed up with his hero Lone Sloane that he would develop in the magazine "Pilote". In the 70’s Philippe Druillet, along with Jean-Pierre Dionnet, Bernard Farkas and Jean “Mœbius” Giraud set up the publishing company Les Humanoïdes Associés and create the magazine Métal Hurlant. From its beginnings, the magazine which has since gone on to achieve cult status, would specialize in Science Fiction. A great number of comics authors were featured in the pages of the magazine, like Yves Chaland, Caza, Schulten, Tardi, René Pétillon, Enki Bilal, Frank Margerin but also writers like Hubert Selby, Hunter Thompson or Charles Bukowski. This magazine was the echo of an underground culture, and gained international success with the creation of its Spanish, Italian, German editions. Its English version Heavy Metal is still published in the United States. The magazine had such an impact that it inspired two full-length animated motion pictures, one in 1981 and the second in 2000. All this goes to show how the influential magazine has been treasured by generations, forever establishing Philippe Druillet and Mœbius as internationally acclaimed artists.

Like the greatest painters or composers, Druillet has his own style, distinctive and unique. Television director Josée Dayan asked him to design the sets for Les Rois Maudits, a mini series produced for national TV network France 2. The acclaimed mini series went on to gain international success, allowing the notoriety of Philippe Druillet’s work to expand into a media that he loves so much. His fans are hopeful this foray into the audiovisual will lead him to develop his CGI feature film based on Nosferatu, and his famous graphic novel Salammbô.
