This spectacular Matte Painting was featured in the first season Star Trek: The Original Series episode “The Menagerie, Part I”. This painting features the landscape of Starbase 11, where the crew beams down to in the first act of the episode.

 

These painting were used by filmmakers to create the illusion of an environment that would otherwise be too expensive or impossible to build or visit. Historically, matte painters and film technicians have used various techniques to combine a matte-painted image with live-action  footage. The painting was done by Albert Whitlock in about a week. The Matte Painting was also featured in the episode "Court Martial”.
