John Solie original art for Steven Spielberg's 1941 unused advance 1-sheet

Original artwork by artist John Solie for an unused advance one-sheet poster for Steven Spielberg’s 1979 film '1941'.

This explosive concept art features the unforgettable “Wild Bill” Kelso, played by John Belushi—a chaotic and hilarious symbol of wartime madness in Spielberg’s cult comedy.

Solie’s bold illustration also pays homage to James Montgomery Flagg’s iconic “I Want YOU for U.S. Army” recruitment poster—infusing that patriotic imagery with wild comic energy.

Though this version was never released, it was ultimately replaced by a now-famous photographic one-sheet featuring Belushi in full costume, pointing straight at the viewer with the tagline:
“Wild Bill wants YOU to see 1941 at your local theater.”

A brilliant parody that completed the marketing vision of the film.
