Joanna Johnston

Back to the Future II costumes were designed by English costume designer, Joanna Johnston, who has worked extensively in films industry, particulary in America. She is especially known for her collaborations with Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis. After being assitant costume designer on Death on the Nile, she work on Roman Polanski’s Tess. Still as assitant costume designer, Johnston worked for the first time with Steven Spielberg, in 1984, on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and then on the Color Purple. Her first feature film costume design credit was 1987's Hellraiser. A year later she worked with Robert Zemeckis on the highly successfull Who Frames Roger Rabbit, produce by ScienceFictionArchives Honorary President Robert Watts. The working relationship with Zemeckis continued through Back to the Future II, Back to the Future III, Death Becomes Her, Contact, Forrest Gump, Cast Away and Polar Express.

In 1989, Spielberg hired her as designer on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and they worked together again on Saving Private Ryan, War of the Worlds, Munich and War Horse, and the up coming Lincoln.

Johnston also designed the costumes for M. Night Shyamalan’s first two feature The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.
