Original Animatronic Purple Thermian Puppet from Galaxy Quest

This is the screen-used original leader of the Thermians who greets Tim Allen and the rest of his crew as they arrive aboard the NTE-3120 (Not The Enterprise ;-).

The Hollywood special effects artist Stan Winston, and his crew supervised by Shane Mahan, created the "true forms" of the octopus-like Thermians Designs for the creatures began with Harold Ramis attached as director, and continued under the direction of Steven Spielberg, whose DreamWorks Studio was producing the film, when Ramis left the project.

Mark Crash McCreery, the film Art Director, fleshed-out rendering of a Thermian, based on a design by Simon Bisley. Christopher Swift sculpts a Thermian maquette at Stan Winston Studio, and then a crew built the Thermians, five large, brightly colored, cable-operated silicone puppets, separately molding forty-five tentacles for each one. FX artist Trevor L. Hensley did give the final touch to the alien by painting the animatronic.

The Thermian in our collection is the purple one, and it is made of solid silicone with the full armature and mechanisms still in place such as eyes, face, neck, tentacles and tendrils - steel and fiberglass inner structure support the heavy figure.

Measures 65 in. (long) x 53 in. (wide) x 57 in. high (with base).
