Snaggletooth Original Mask from Star Wars Cantina

This is the original Snaggletooth mask from the Mos Eisley Cantina from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The chatacter became famous amoung fans thanks to its Kenner action figure. This original mask was made by famed British artist Stuart Freeborn.

This original mask made by Freeborn was repainted, by Stan Winston's team, to appear in the 1978 TV show Star Wars Holiday Special. The mask was then used again as extra on The Empire Strikes Back and for the part of Geezum in Return of the Jedi.

Stuart Freeborn was head of the makeup department for first Star Wars, Freeborn was responsible for the creation of Chewbacca. He and his team designed and built many of the fan favorite creatures in the Mos Eisley Cantina sequence, including Greedo, Walrus Man, Snaggletooth as well as the Tauntaun, the Wampa ice creature and Yoda for The Empire Strikes Back, and Jabba the Hutt for Return of the Jedi.

Freeborn died in February 2013, leaving a legacy of unforgettable contributions to film, including classic characters Chewbacca, Yoda and the Ewoks. Before his involvement on Star Wars, Freeborn was responsible for the creation of the ape-like human ancestors in the “Dawn of Man” sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and memorably transformed Peter Sellers into multiple roles in Doctor Strangelove.
